Student Awards

Gold Slips

Students are given gold slips by any staff member who wants to reward a student for:  helping in the classroom or around the school, demonstrating good citizenship, class work and homework excellence, and other behaviors that demonstrate excellence.  The students in each classroom put their gold slips into a jar and on every Friday two student names are chosen from the jar to come to the office for prizes.

Marking Period Awards

At the end of each marking period an awards assembly is held to honor student achievement.  The following awards are presented:

          Perfect Attendance

For students who have not missed a day.

Outstanding Effort

For students who have shown excellence in setting goals, hard work, and determination either in their own work or as tutors, mentors, or classroom helpers.

Most Improved

For students who have worked very hard this period and have exceeded their past work, achieving their personal best.

Good Citizens

For students who have demonstrated good citizenship toward teachers and fellow students.

Kindness and Character Award

Recognizes students who have demonstrated kindness toward fellow students and staff, and who have an exemplary character as demonstrated by their actions.

High Achiever

Recognizes students who have achieved high academic success this marking period.

Smith Newcomer Award

Mr. William French Smith is a former DPS employee.  This award is granted from Mr. Smith to award newcomers to the United States who are in the Newcomer Resource classroom.  Two students are chosen each marking period from the Newcomer classroom who have shown great character through the code of conduct and great academic progress in learning a new language and in other academic subjects.

Mile-High Scholars

Each semester one student from each grade level is selected as a Mile-high Scholar.  These students have demonstrated great academic success, citizenship, and character.  A ceremony is held downtown where the Mayor of Denver gives the students their award.

5th Grade Outstanding Student

At the 5th grade continuation one outstanding 5th grade student has received a computer and printer to take on to middle school.  This student is chosen by the 5th grade staff as representing a student who has excelled throughout his/her years at Whiteman in academics, citizenship, and character.  This award is granted through the kindness of one of our neighbors.

Other Awards

Throughout the year there are other opportunities for student recognition.  In past years we have had students awarded honors in writing from the Young Author’s program, in art from various showcases, and in reading for the Million Words Campaign.
