Character Education

Whiteman has an on-going focus on character education.  We use our code of conduct, The Whiteman Way, as a touchstone that we say every morning after the Pledge of Allegiance.  Early in the year we discuss each line of the touchstone so students are clear on the meaning and the behaviors expected.

We believe that all students are entitled to a safe, nurturing learning environment.  Teachers and all school personnel work to help students with character building skills.  Throughout the school we have posters which focus on character education key points and bully proofing.  We promote respect, responsibility, citizenship, caring, trustworthiness, and fairness everyday with our gold slip award system.  Periodically, assemblies are scheduled that focus on the key areas of character education and bully proofing.

We have been fortunate in past years to have the “Youth Matters” program for our 5th grade students.  This program builds character by focusing on many of the issues and choices facing students today

Our behavior policy is clearly stated in the student handbook and our teachers use the “Time To Teach” model in dealing with behavior problems.  Parents/guardians are encouraged to review school rules with their students.  We have an ice cream coupon at the beginning of school for students who bring back a signed sheet from their parents stating they have reviewed the rules.
