Library and ILT

Whiteman’s LMC (Library/Media Center) houses a vast collection and the computer lab.  We have been generously supported with grants and donations from Carmel Hill, the Laura Bush Foundation, the Denver Broncos, and from the District #3 Police to help us build our library offerings.

We have a librarian who collaborates with classroom teachers to develop student skills on research projects, enhance classroom instruction, and provide materials and learning opportunities around curriculum for students of all levels.  The librarian is also instrumental in working with teachers to do the Star Early Literacy testing that helps teachers set Accelerated Reader goals for each student.

Information Literacy and Technology (ILT) is integrated into the instructional program during both library time and in the classroom.  Students use the computers for research projects, to take AR (Accelerated Reader) quizzes, and for skills training through various programs.  The Everyday Math games site is also used to reinforce math concepts.  Our English language learners also use the computer lab and classroom computers for the English In A Flash program.

All classrooms have at least two networked computers for student use, and all 3rd – 5th grade classrooms have a writing center for students with a dedicated printer.  We believe that our students need this exposure to using technology and have even offered a computer art class for creative exploration in the lab.

We are hoping to upgrade our lab in the near future as it is over six years old.  This seems young, but in tech years it’s ancient.
