Whiteman
offers enrichment experiences during specials rotations in visual arts, general/vocal
and instrumental music, and drama. Whiteman’s visual art room was started from an Art Space grant we received from the Gay and Lesbian Fund of Colorado (GLFC). This grant allowed us to convert one classroom into a dedicated visual art workshop. The mill-levy funding has allowed us to continue to offer this class to all students. Students study artists and art history through exploration with various media. Music A Comcast
and VH-1 Save-the-music grant allowed us to start an instrumental music program
for our 4th and 5th grade students. We have woodwind, brass, and percussion
instruments for students who are interested and have shown by their classroom
work and behavior that they can be responsible for an instrument. The Whiteman Ensemble presents at the arts
festivals each year. Vocal and
general music are offered to all students in the specials rotation. It is fitting that we have music in our halls
as we are named for Wilberforce Whiteman, who was the director of music for the
Denver Public Schools for many years. Part of our music program has been to include a short movement piece from our dance team. This was started last year and was very well received by both students and parents. Drama We have
added drama to our specials rotation with the new mill levy funding. Drama is an enrichment activity that reinforces
our literacy goals. The teamwork
involved in selecting, developing, and staging a piece for presentation truly
benefits our students. We have a puppet
stage that our students can use for special plays they have written. This is very fun for even our youngest
thespians. |
